I also think that your buddy originally belonged to this dad.
The game was never finished because of that, so your buddy finishes it. However while making the game he gets cancer and dies. He feels bad about his abuse so creates this game to make it up to him. It seems pretty clear this dad has an alcohol problem, and while on alcohol tends to be abusive, which is why he can't see his son, Owen. Journey to the north was originally a game that a father made for his estranged son that he doesn't get to see often. That game's original title is "Journey to the North" which your buddy changes the title to "The adventure of you". Although he may have helped put it together, he is not the original creator of the game. However your buddy then, if you allow it will "create" another game. Originally it only has the three games you can play with your buddy. That game is the one you start off playing. One is the buddy simulator, where you create and interact with an ai.
